George F. Moura
February 14th, 1951 - July 22nd, 2026
February 14th, 1951 - July 22nd, 2026
George Frederic Moura, affectionately known as “Geo” or “Giz,” passed away on July 22 at Central Maine Medical Center at the age of 75.
Born on February 14, 1951, in Whitefield, New Hampshire, to parents George A. Moura and Kathryn C. Moura. George lived a life built on hard work, honesty, and love for his friends and family.
In his younger years, George was a logger and woodsman, developing the toughness, skill, and deep appreciation for the outdoors that would remain with him throughout his life. His abilities eventually took him far beyond the woods of Maine. As a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, George became an accomplished machine operator, working on some of the world's largest cranes in Alaska. His work was demanding and highly skilled, and he took great pride in what he could accomplish. George was the kind of man who never shied away from a challenge and believed that a hard day's work was something to be proud of.
George was a thoughtful, intelligent, and remarkably fair man. He had a curious mind and, when he was younger, an interest in spiritualism and the deeper questions of life. As he grew older, he enjoyed PBS and National Public Radio and was an enthusiastic supporter of Democratic causes. Yet George was never one to take himself too seriously. Beneath his thoughtful and intellectual side was a wonderfully silly man who could have a great time and knew how to enjoy life. He loved spending time around a table playing cards or conversing with family and good company over a few drinks. He had a way of making the moment feel special simply by being there.
He is survived by his son, Gabriel E. Moura; his daughter, Brittany Moura; and his granddaughter, Leilah M. Moura. He is also survived by sisters Antoinette Freeman, Kathleen Ferguson, and Stephanie Moura, and predeceased by siblings Guy F. Moura and Barbara Brackett.
George will be remembered for his intelligence and fairness, his love of the outdoors and the land, his adventurous spirit, his generosity of thought, and his wonderfully irreverent sense of humor. He lived a full and unconventional life, on his own terms, and left behind a lifetime of memories that will remain with those who knew and loved him.
He will undoubtedly be deeply missed and remembered with love and laughter.
Please join George's family for a Celebration of Life with food served and a cash bar on October 24 from 1pm to 5pm at the Evergreen Golf Club, 522 Dallas Hill Rd., Rangeley, Maine.
